Buddy Rhodes "How-To"

Camosse Masonry Supply will be holding our initial Introductory Training on Buddy Rhodes Products and Techniques.

When April 1, 2008

Where Camosse Masonry Supply
23 Trolley Crossing Road
Charlton, MA

Time Coffee & Registration 8 am

Training 8:30 am to 4 pm

Cost $75

Most distributors charge $150 to attend this class. Because it is our first time, and we want to make it inviting, we are subsidizing the cost. Don’t look for this price for the next one!

Introductory Training (Phase I)
The program offers a basic class, in a one day format that provides a general overview of the Buddy Rhodes techniques, including how to make and pack molds, and to mix, color, and seal. The goal is teach installers how to avoid mistakes, and to start to understand how all of the products are used.

Buddy Rhodes has asked us to limit the class size to no more than twelve to fifteen. For that reason, we are limiting the attendance to one representative per company. If we have enough people interested, they would be willing to fly in earlier and do the same course on March 31. We scheduled the first session for April 1 because it ties into our exhibiting at the Residential Trade Show in Boston on the 2nd and 3rd. We are asking that all attendees pay in advance to insure that we have a full class. We will provide coffee and donuts in the morning, and will bring in pizza and soda for lunch. For directions, log onto www.camosse.com and hit the "find directions" button. And by the way, we now have products in stock at our Worcester location. Please call for price and availability of our starting inventory. As a final incentive to attend the training, we will be listing all of the companies that attend any of the workshops on our website under the banner of "Completed Phase I Training in the Buddy Rhodes System" and "Completed Phase II Training in the Buddy Rhodes System". Where our company and Buddy Rhodes does not endorse any one installer over another, seeing you listed may give a potential customer a higher degree of comfort, and give you an edge over the competition.

We are currently planning on offering the following program in the near future.

Comprehensive Training (Phase II)
Designed for the concrete contractor who is making a commitment to the decorative concrete marketplace, this program offers a concentrated curriculum for fabricators in a two day format.

The workshop provides in-depth training in templating, mold making, pre-casting using Buddy’s signature pressed, toweled and ground surfaces, and finishing techniques. By the end of this workshop, the contractor will be fully capable of producing high quality, Buddy Rhodes-style countertops.

Stone of the Week

Each week we will showcase a new stone product and keep you informed with whats available!

This week it is Weathered Whiteline Flagging. This material was reclaimed from a patio behind a New England estate.

Blue, green, grey and white come together to give a great base for tan highlights. This stone was selected for its larger flatter surfaces.

We have a limited supply of two-three hundred square feet.
Contact us today if your interested in seeing this material at our Charlton location.

East West Stone

East West Stone provides a drystack modular thin veneer. These panels are sold in one square foot sections measuring 6" high x 24" long. This thin veneer system allows for easy estimation and installation. With the use of latex modified mortar this stone is adhered to a properly prepared surface.

For more information in regards to East West Stone or any other thin stone please contact us today!

Trow and Holden Company

This information was provide off of the Trow and Holden website.

TOOL GLOSSARY

WHICH TOOLS ARE RIGHT FOR YOU?
CARBIDE TIPS

The following explanations are not meant to be all inclusive. They are an aid for the beginning stoneworker or those more experienced who are unfamiliar with a particular chisel or tool design.
Carbide tips are tougher and more effective for use with harder stone, such as granite or the harder marbles. Carbide should outlast steel by at least 30 times, and will require much less maintenance over the life of the tool. When comparing price vs. performance, carbide is by far the better value.
CHISELS The following chisels come with a 1/2" round shank and are intended for use with a Trow & Holden pneumatic tool (or other tools using standard 1/2" round shanks). Many can be adapted for hand use with a detachable striking cap (see below). 5/8" round shanks are also available.

MACHINE CHISEL WITH FINISHING BLADE:Used for general carving, sculpting and lettering.

MACHINE CHISEL WITH ROUGHING BLADE:Used where heavy removal and rough usage is required.

CLEANING UP CHISEL: A finishing tool used as a scraper to close the grain, commonly used on granite.

CARVER'S DRILL:Rotate gently between your fingers while your pneumatic tool provides the impact to drill holes up to 1/2" in depth in your material. Smaller sizes are used for detail carving where a rounded blade (small rondel) is required.

MARBLE TOOTH CHISEL:For aggressive stock removal and roughing out marble and softer stone.

MARBLE CUTTING CHISEL: Used after the tooth chisel to close the grain, or when slower, more controlled stone removal is desired.

MACHINE POINT: For use with pneumatic tool to rough out stone and knock off high points.

4-POINT TOOTH CHISEL: For aggressive stock removal when roughing out. Let it "dance," for fast, controlled roughing out. Use on granite, sandstone or limestone.

9-POINT TOOTH CHISEL: Follows the 4-point, leaving a more uniform surface. Also works well on marble and softer stone.

CUP CHISEL: A bushing tool that will follow the stone and close the surface without digging in. Leaves a unique texture. Most effective when it bounces freely (or "dances") along the surface.

DOUBLE BLADE CHISEL: Can be used after the 4-point or 9-point to take off high spots and quickly smooth surfaces.

BUSH CHISEL: A finishing tool to close the grain. Blades may be added or removed as needed - the more blades, the smoother the finish.

THREE-BLADE BUSHING CHISEL: Smoother than a double blade, leaving an axed or brushed finish.

CRISS-CROSS CHISEL: Cuts quickly, leaving a unique cross-hatched finish. A nice tool to follow the 9-point or three-blade.

SPLITTER OR CAPE CHISEL: Used for crisping lines, joining corners, detailing, or splitting. Cuts are narrower and deeper. Also used by masons for removing old mortar in preparation for repointing.

RIPPER: For faster stone removal on hard surfaces in hard-to-reach places. Also used by masons for joint preparation.

DETACHABLE STRIKING CAP: This cap converts 1/2" machine tool shanks into hand tools, providing a larger hardened steel striking surface so the tool can be struck with a hammer without damaging the shank. For light duty use only. Not intended for use with carving chisels (see page 8).

HAND TOOLS
Our hand tool striking heads are tempered to provide both good wear and impact resistance. They will "swell" with repeated use and should be ground frequently to maintain their correct "as-new" shape and ensure their safe performance. Call us with any questions you might have regarding the proper maintenance of your tools and remember, always wear hand, eye and ear protection when using any of our tools

HAND POINT: For roughing out and knocking off high spots.

HAND CHISEL: For general shaping, splitting and roughing out.

HAND SET (or PITCHING TOOL): For trimming stone to size when the surface is relatively flat.

HAND TRACER For tracing split lines and splitting stone.

MASON'S CHIPPER For light trimming or squaring edges

OFFSET HAND SET Used when chipper style is desired but more strength is needed.

HAND PLUG DRILL For putting holes in stone by hand. Simply rotate between strikes.

CUSTOM FABRICATION

Due to the highly individualistic nature of working with stone, there may be tools you might find useful that are not described above. The craftsmen at Trow and Holden will custom fabricate tools to your design and specification, or will modify our tools to meet your particular needs. Just let us know what material you are working with (eg. marble, granite, etc.) and provide, if possible, a dimensional sketch of the tool you have in mind. We will gladly quote price and delivery with no minimum quantity required.

Trow & Holden Co. chisels are unconditionally guaranteed against defects in manufacturing or materials. Damage resulting from mishandling or failure to correctly maintain the tool may not be covered under this guarantee. These conditions include:

Failure to grind the striking head and sharpen the blade as needed;

Dipping a carbide-tipped chisel into water or oil to cool it during sharpening;

Using a tool to perform a task for which it was not intended. We will do our best to make sure you have the information you need to to choose the right tool for the job. In addition to this catalog, please refer to the following for assistance in how to select, use and care for your Trow & Holden tools:
