winter months, Jay Camosse
typically has less work to do.
But now, with friendlier
weather and the summer
months approaching, he is
much busier.
Camosse
is the general

masonry supplies and stone
to contractors and homeowners.
His father, Henry, and
three uncles own the business,
which also has a store in
Worcester.
“It is real satisfying,” the 26-
year-old Charlton native and
Shepherd Hill Regional High
School graduate said during
an interview at the business
last week.

Charlton native helps family run business

For Camosse, running the business is

a labor of love that he
approaches with passion for helping
customers realize their home
improvement dreams. To accomplish
that, he has turned to the information
superhighway. Camosse operates
a blog for the business that has
attracted customers from outside the
Central Massachusetts area. One
customer from New York City bought
a stone fireplace set from Camosse,
who he was scheduled to deliver it
last week. The Web site also features
products available for customers. He
also shipped supplies to as far away
as Nantucket island.
“The blog is great,” he said. “It’s
connected me to the highest market
out there.”
Camosse also operates a blog for
his own business, Stone Of New
England. He collects stone and sells it
through Camosse Masonry. That Web
site features various types of stone
from different communities.
For Camosse, the drive for his profession
is all in the family.
With no intention of attending college
after high school, Camosse was
looking to work in the stone business.
But unlike some families, he
didn’t feel pressured to inherit the
business.
“I was never asked to be in it for
the long haul,” he said.
After six years of operating the
Charlton store with his two brothers,
Camosse has realized his dreams and
thoroughly enjoys his customers. He
often gives customers tours of the
store to help them decide what supplies
they may need.
“Landscaping and stone seems to
put people’s guard down,” he said.
“In the end, the customer is ecstatic.”
Thankfully, the business has fared
well during the economic recession,
according to Camosse. While
acknowledging the masonry industry
in general has taken a beating,
Camosse said his store is in good
shape, although customers are carefully
considering the value of the
money they spend. They often have
limited budgets to buy materials,
Camosse said, which he has to work
within to satisfy their needs. Doing
that, he acknowledged, is difficult.
“Sometimes that means a little
sweat equity,” he said.
“We’re having a fairly good year.
We have been lucky that most do-ityourselfers
are putting more money
into their property.”
With desires to expand, an outdoor
stonework showcase display is being
built. When complete, the various
sections will be labeled with the
names of contractors that constructed
that portion. The display is meant
to attract customers to the store and
give business to the contractors
Camosse refers customers to.
With the new display, Camosse sees
a bright future for the business.
To Camosse, his work is so much
more than just a full-time job.
It is pretty easy to show up,” he
said.

Introductory Training (Phase I)

For that reason, we are limiting the attendance to one representative per company. We are asking that all attendees pay in advance to insure that we have a full class. Comprehensive Training (Phase II)

Designed for the concrete contractor who is making a commitment to the decorative concrete marketplace, this program offers a concentrated curriculum for fabricators in a two day format. The workshop provides in-depth training in templating, mold making, pre-casting using Buddy’s signature pressed, toweled and ground surfaces, and finishing techniques. By the end of this workshop, the contractor will be fully capable of producing high quality, Buddy Rhodes-style countertops.

2nd Annual Cultured Stone Contest

Contest Rules

1. Purchase any landscape material at retail price from Camosse Masonry Supply between April 1st and September 30th 2009.

2. Install the material yourself, at your own residence. This contest is open to residential, home owner installed projects only.

3. Submit three before and three after photos, along with a copy of your receipt from Camosse Masonry, October 1st , 2009. Digital photos on disc are preferred.

4. The homeowner judged to best interpret the definition of Cultured Stone in their project, as described above, will be reimbursed for materials purchased from Camosse Masonry Supply, up to a maximum of $1000, excluding taxes, pallets, or delivery charges. Second place will be reimbursed for materials purchased from Camosse Masonry Supply, up to a maximum of $500, excluding taxes, pallets, or delivery charges. Third place will be reimbursed for materials purchased from Camosse Masonry Supply, up to a maximum of $250, excluding taxes, pallets, or delivery charges. Winners will be required to fill out 1099 forms, and are responsible for any and all taxes.

5. Judging shall be done by an independent panel of judges.

6. All photos shall become the property of Camosse Masonry Supply, and may be used for marketing and promotional use.

7. Employees or the families of employees of Camosse Masonry Supply, its product suppliers, or contractors doing work on a residence are not eligible to enter.

8. Concrete masonry or natural stone products shall consist of clay or concrete paving brick, segmental retaining wall block, concrete or aluminum curbing and edging , natural stone items, patio slabs, concrete fountains and statues, and precast fireplace units. It shall not include sealers, cleaners, additives, or tools purchased to construct the project.

9. Winners will be posted on the Website by December 1, 2009.

10. A project may be entered into only one contest sponsered by Camosse Masonry Supply.

What is MASONRYSCAPING? It is the art of using concrete masonry or natural stone products to enhance the beauty of your outdoor environment.

Self Contained Water Features

A large poly tub stores water while a reinforced aluminum grate supports the stone feature. A submersed pump sends water up the center of the stone, over-flowing back into the tub. Assorted beach pebbles cover the grate and create an endless water fall.

Brian here are the pics I promised.

The first picture is the back splash in the kitchen cultured brick only and the rest is the latest. My bedroom wall is cultured brick and cultured stone. We used Bucks County, 773 bricks and a whole box of stone, even some real stones in there. Wow, what a project. It took me about a month to complete working nights after work till it was done.

I could teach this now!

Polymeric joint sand for use with most types of landscaping pavers such as :

SuperSand Bond polymeric sand

SuperSand Bond is a unique mixture of polymer binders and a calibrated sand, available in brown or grey. The installation of this polymeric sand is almost identical to using regular paver joint sand, except for the application of water. Once SuperSand Bond sets, it becomes very firm and locks between the paver joints. This firm bond maintains pavers securely in place, being equally effective on both horizontal and sloped surfaces. It also withstands erosion due to climatic conditions, such as wind, rain and freezing temperatures. SuperSand Bond is recommended for a variety of uses, including pool sides, patios, foot paths, driveways, parking spaces, pavements, etc.

SuperSand Bond has the ability to expand and condense. This elasticity ensures that the paver joints avoid cracking and are properly filled at all times. Thus, it will also help prevent insect penetration and weed sprouting. SuperSand Bond should only be used when pavers or tiles are installed on a drainage bed system (stone dust, crushed stone, sand). It is not recommended when pavers or tiles are set above a concrete base. Make your home a more beautiful place to live with the texture, pattern and color of pavers. Pavers are locally available in a variety of warm colors, and enable you to personalize any outdoor area. Natural or concrete pavers provide a durable and beautiful alternative to concrete or asphalt for patios, walkways, driveways, even streets. Over 200 million square feet of pavers have been installed in North America, and the popularity of these materials is rising steadily. Numerous options exist for size, shape, color and texture. When installed using a polymeric sand such as SuperSandBond, the surface is flexible, withstanding loads, wear and weather. Application of SuperSand Bond polymeric sand is almost identical to using regular joint sand. The only difference is the application of water. Once SuperSandBond dries, the product stabilizes to a firm yet flexible consistency and "locks" permanently into the joints. The joints eliminate the cracking common to concrete surfaces. Pavers stand up well to snow removal processes and resist deicing salts better than conventional asphalt or concrete pavement.

Winter Care for your Outdoor Statuary

Below are a few measures your should take to ensure that your statuary and lawn ornaments stay in top condition!

Statue Care:

Its important to take good care of your concrete or stone statuary during winter months. Keep your statuary & lawn ornaments indoors if possible. If you do not have a space to store your statuary, larger pieces can be wrapped in a tarp to protect them. Its important to store them in a dry area away from dirt & moisture. Statues can be placed on a patio block for stability and protection from moisture. All statuary/fountains containing water must be emptied before the winter months. If water is not emptied, it can cause your statuary to crack. Although these products are ment to handle outdoor conditions, they can still get damaged when not properly taken care of. If your piece does show damage, repair it asap. You can stain and reseal warn out parts.

Its good practice to seal your statuary once a year with a clear, exterior concrete sealer.

Introductory Training (Phase I)

The program offers a basic class, in a one day format that provides a general overview of the Buddy Rhodes techniques, including how to make and pack molds, and to mix, color, and seal. The goal is teach installers how to avoid mistakes, and to start to understand how all of the products are used.Buddy Rhodes has asked us to limit the class size to no more than twelve to fifteen. For that reason, we are limiting the attendance to one representative per company.

We are asking that all attendees pay in advance to insure that we have a full class. We will provide coffee and donuts in the morning, and will bring in pizza and soda for lunch. For a map, click here.

As an incentive to attend the training, we will be listing all of the companies that attend any of the workshops on our website under the banner of "Completed Phase I Training in the Buddy Rhodes System" and "Completed Phase II Training in the Buddy Rhodes System". Where our company and Buddy Rhodes does not endorse any one installer over another, seeing you listed may give a potential customer a higher degree of comfort, and give you an edge over the competition.

PA Barn Stone: Stone with a Story

Pennsylvania Barn Stone

Some stone comes from massive quarries which require heavy-duty machines to cut and move it, while others are taken from large, vast fields and palletized on-site.

Our Pennsylvania Barn Stone was reclaimed and salvaged from an old barn on a farm in the fields of the keystone state.

The brownstone was carefully dismantled and repackaged- ready to be shipped to the right home.

The following pictures show the process followed to salvage antique material.

After a 6 hour drive north, the material arrives here in Charlton, MA where it is carefully unloaded and placed into our yard.

A softer stone, this material has fossils and shells throughout. It shows beautiful browns, oranges, tans and reds.

If you're looking for a rare, one-of-a-kind material, this is your stone!

Bluestone Face-lift

Below is a photo of a rental home in Chatham, MA. The homeowner approached a local contractor looking for a new walkway to add dimension to their property.

Although the picture isn't clear, you can see that the steps are a brick/concrete mix and are starting to fall apart.

The walkway is asphalt and pieces are already missing and its cracked in many spots.

The beds are lined with cobblestones and are uneven.

Taking cost into consideration, the contractor decided to go with cut bluestone treads.

The finished product is pictured below and matches the exterior beautifully.

Completely removing the asphalt and replacing it with bluestone added a more finished look.

The steps remained as the base for the new bluestone product to adhere to.

Each piece of bluestone was hand cut to form a simplistic pattern, which added a unique, updated style.

Using the cobbles that the homeowner already had in addition to several more made the new planting beds stand out.

A granite post was added to the end of the walkway to add to the Cape Cod look.

Some new plants and freshly mulched beds complete the project.

What is Pennsylvania Bluestone?

Pennsylvania Bluestone is a unique sand stone found only in Northeastern Pennsylvania and mostly in Susquehanna County. Pennsylvania Bluestone derives its name from its typically blue color. It is marketed in two types: dimensional (architectural grade) used for stairsteps, window and door fixtures, countertops, and tabletops, and flagstone, which is used for walkways and patios. As sediments fossilized into rock, minerals carried by groundwater through rock deposits created other colors, including: blue, green, earthtone, and lilac or a combination of these shades. Pennsylvania Bluestone is a strong, stable stone that resists cracking and won’t discolor. Pennsylvania Bluestone is highly prized as a building material and for adding architectural details because it can be easily separated into slabs of desired size.

Pennsylvania Bluestone is appealing to landscapers and architects seeking a connection to the environment. Pennsylvania Bluestone is flexible, fitting into contemporary and traditional designs. Landscapers use Pennsylvania Bluestone to create walls, steps, sidewalks, patios and as a complimentary material in building facades. Pennsylvania Bluestone is also used in interior decorating for fireplaces, countertops, flooring, lamps and other architectural details. Artists and crafters also use Pennsylvania Bluestone to create interesting gifts such as clocks, lamps, tables, desk plaques and signs, along with imaginative and captivating works of art. World’s Longest Cable Stayed Concrete Bridge: The Dames Point Bridge spans the St. Johns River northeast of downtown Jacksonville, Florida. Two miles long, and 175 feet above the main channel of the river, the central span of the bridge is 1300 feet between the two towers which are 471 feet above the waterline at the top. Opened to traffic in 1989, it is a premier example of the beautiful simplicity of the cable-stayed bridge.

Concrete vs. Asphalt
Sixty percent of the 47,744 mile U.S. Interstate Highway System was built of concrete. Concrete was selected because of its superior durability, safety, higher reflection of light at night, and greater traction.

**Concrete Pavement consistently serves 20-30 years without needing major repair, while asphalt generally lasts only 8-12 years before resurfacing, or significant repairs are required.

**Concrete naturally can support the heaviest loads, such as truck traffic and increasingly larger vehicles like jumbo-jets.

**There is less deformation with concrete as compared to asphalt and although the initial cost of concrete can be higher than asphalt, concrete usually has a useful life that is twice as long as asphalt.

(Denver, Colorado) -- Maintaining the American standard of living required 7.1 billion tons of rocks and minerals last year to make the things we use and depend upon every day, says Nelson Fugate, President of the Denver based Mineral Information Institute (MII).“Every year, nearly 48,000 pounds of new minerals must be provided for every person in the United States to make the products we buy and the various things we use,” says Fugate, “and with 300 million people in the U.S. expecting to live comfortably and affordably, mining has to occur somewhere.”Each year the Institute calculates the annual and lifetime consumption of mineral and energy resources from information provided by the U.S. Geological Survey and other sources to show the dependence that Americans have on the mining industry.The Institute claims we use minerals in almost everything we do. There are 125 million houses in the U.S. that require heating, cooling, and lighting, and two million new housing units are built every year and each needs a quarter million pounds of minerals and metals.The luxury and necessity to travel to our jobs, to school, and numerous other reasons means each of us uses a share of the 4 million miles of roads that need to be built and maintained, along with the 237 million motor vehicles that travel on those roads, and contributes to our consumption of oil that averages 3 gallons per capita per day.On an annual basis every person in the USA requires at least:

As we enter a new millennium, more emphasis is being placed on preserving and protecting the world's environment. In this age of environmental consciousness, consumers are looking for products that are, well, "greener" than ever before. Brick has been a popular building material since ancient times - way before it was cool to be green - and brick is friendlier to the environment than many new convenience materials.

It stands to reason that brick, made from a combination of the distinctly earthly elements of clay, water and fire, is about as back-to-the-basics as building products come. This assumption has been confirmed in recent years by industry and academic research on sustainable buildings and green architecture. In fact, the American Institute of Architect's Environmental Resource Guide (1996) advises architects to "select brick, tile or concrete masonry products when possible." Let's take a look at some of the specific attributes that make brick an environmentally friendly building choice.

Brick as a Building Material
First, brick's mass prevents temperature extremes on the outside of a building from effecting temperature on the inside. Sometimes called "thermal lag," this process translates into year-round comfort and energy savings for occupants. An insulated brick cavity wall resists heat gain more than 50 times better than double-reflective glass and nine times better than an insulated metal sandwich panel wall. Second, brick walls require less insulation than lightweight walls (i.e., synthetic stucco, vinyl, aluminum or wood) for the same energy performance.
Publications are full of articles pertaining to global warming and the effects it is having on weather patterns often proving destructive. Using brick as a building material offers homeowners a sense of safety because brick can withstand severe wind and weather. Following the devastation of Hurricane Floyd, a brick "Hurricane House"- built to withstand 100 to 110 mph winds with little or no damage - made its debut in a Norfolk, Virginia-area Parade of Homes.

Finally, consumers building with brick can rest assured that the brick on their houses will last. Brick stands the test of time. The Ziggurat at Ur, a Mesopotamian temple-tower made of fired clay brick between 2113 - 2095 BC stands today, very well preserved. The famous Great Wall of China, constructed around 210 BC, is made of 3,873,000,000 individual bricks. In this country, one of the more famous historic brick buildings is Independence Hall built in Philadelphia in the 1700s.

Mining & Manufacturing
As brick originates from the earth's clay, it thrives as a nearly inexhaustible natural resource and is manufactured in 38 states. Furthermore, the clay mining process is virtually harmless to the environment, and a small mining site may be used for more than a century. After they have been depleted, clay pits can be converted into wildlife reserves or lakes for sport, recreation or conservation use. Carolina Ceramic, Inc. has concerted its clay pit into a 2,000-acre wildlife refuge for deer, turkey, dove and quail, while Acme Brick has transformed more than a dozen of its depleted pits to wildlife sanctuaries stocked with corn-fed catfish. An outstanding example of the care brick companies take in reclaiming mined land, Cherokee Brick and Tile's 5,000-acre lowland habitat near Macon, Georgia, has been recognized by the local Audobon Society as home to more than 240 species of birds, including several rare and threatened species.
Unlike other building materials, brick creates little waste when it is manufactured. Mining one pound of clay produces nearly one pound of brick with only slight moisture and mineral loss. In comparison, up to 70% of the ore used in making steel amounts to waste. The figure is even higher for aluminum - up to 88% of the ore used is waste. Disposing of these wastes requires additional energy, adding to the environmental impact of manufacturing.
The amount of energy needed to produce brick is lower than most competing building materials. It takes 50 times more energy to produce one pound of aluminum than to produce the same amount of brick. Brick manufacturing conserves energy in another way as well. Virtually all U.S. brick plants are located within a 20-mile radius of their manufacturing facility, minimizing the energy expended in transporting the raw material to manufacturing sites. No raw clay is imported into the U.S., while approximately 90 percent of the ore used for aluminum and about 25 percent used for steel must be imported. Consumers seeking that "Made in the USA" seal can rest assured that virtually all brick used in the U.S. is manufactured domestically.

Recycling Brick
In an effort to recycle - and because of its unique appearance - the popularity of old or antique brick is on the rise. Used brick is becoming a fashionable alternative in residential construction. In some areas of the country, "antique" brick commands a higher price than new brick. Recently, Chicago common brick manufactured in the 1930s was in very high demand. People ordered it from all over the country for its quaint, historical and aged appeal. It is important to take your external environment into account when considering used brick, as some older brick has a poor freeze-thaw resistance that could be a factor in certain areas of the country.
In another innovative form of recycling, new brick that fails to meet the manufacturers' standards can be easily recycled through an inexpensive crushing process. Crushed brick or "brick chips" may then be used as landscape material or reground to manufacture new, quality brick.

Remember, just because a house or building is being completely renovated, does not mean that all of the existing brick must go. Because of brick's long life, it is typically the last material in a building to require recycling. Many renovation projects renew the building around the original existing brick walls.

The generation now in a position to purchase homes is more environmentally conscious than any generation before it. Like it or not, the trend they have created toward purchasing more natural products has become a factor in the homebuying process. "When polled, most Americans identify themselves as environmentalists," according to Kenneth Hooker, editor of Masonry Construction. Furthermore he states, "The environmental issues surrounding construction are certain to continue growing in importance." Hooker cites brick's "durability, thermal storage capacity, and ability to serve as both structure and finish" as key product benefits for environmentally concerned consumers.

How to Prevent Water Damage to your Masonry Chimney

One of the most important rules when building a masonry chimney other than safety, is to ensure that the brick are completely sealed & water proofed. If a masonry chimney is not sealed, it can lead to deterioration of brick & mortar and rusting of steel & cast iron fireboxes and accessories, costing you MORE, later.

Below is an excerpt from an informational article by the Chimney Safety Institute of America (http://www.csia.org/) entitled "Water Damage and your Masonry Chimney." This article explains not only how important it is to seal your investment, but also how cost effective it can be in the long run.

"As odd as it may seem, water causes more damage to masonry chimneys than fire. Think about it for a moment. All the brick and other materials that make up your home are protected by the roof and eave, all that is, except your chimney. The chimney bravely sticks up above the roof constantly exposed to all the elements; rain, snow, and freeze/thaw cycles.
A masonry chimney is constructed of a variety of masonry and metal materials, including brick, mortar, tile, steel and cast iron. All of these materials will suffer accelerated deterioration as a result of prolonged contact with water.

Masonry materials deteriorate quickly when exposed to the freeze/thaw process in which moisture that has penetrated the materials periodically freezes and expands, causing undue stress. Water in the chimney also causes rust in steel and cast iron, weakening or destroying the metal parts.

Water penetration can cause interior and exterior damage to your home and masonry chimney including:

Spalled and broken brickwork
Deteriorated metal or masonry firebox assemblies
Rusted damper assemblies
Rotted adjacent wood and ruined wall coverings
Deteriorated central heating system
Decayed mortar
Cracked flue liner systems

Preventing Water Damage
Following are the four main ways to prevent water damage.

Install a Chimney Cap
Chimney caps, also called rain covers, are probably the most inexpensive preventive measure that a homeowner can employ to prevent water penetration and damage to the chimney. Chimneys have one or more large openings (flues) at the top that collect rain water and funnel it directly to the chimney interior. A strong, well designed cap not only keeps this water out, but will also prevent birds and animals from entering and nesting in the chimney.
Caps also function as spark arrestors, preventing sparks from landing on the roof or other nearby combustible material.

Repair or Replace a Damaged Chimney Crown
The chimney crown, also referred to as the chimney wash, is the top element of a masonry chimney. It covers and seals the top of the chimney from the flue liners to the chimney edge. Most masonry chimneys are built with an inadequate crown constructed from common mortar mix, the same mixture used to lay the bricks of the chimney. This mortar is not designed for and will not withstand years of weather abuse without cracking, chipping or deteriorating; situations that allow water to penetrate the chimney. In fact, most sand and mortar crowns crack almost immediately after installation because of shrinkage.
A proper chimney crown should be constructed of a portland cement based mixture and cast or formed so it provides an overhang, or drip edge, projecting beyond all sides of the chimney by a minimum of two inches. This drip edge directs the runoff from the crown away from the sides of the chimney, helping prevent erosion of the brick and mortar in the chimney's vertical surfaces.
There are also some modern waterproof, non-shrinking, cement like coatings for repairing damaged mortar crowns that seem to work fine.

Repair or Replace Flashing
Flashing is the seal between the roofing material and the chimney. Flashing prevents rain water from running down the chimney into living spaces where it can damage ceilings or walls, or cause rot in rafters, joists, or other structural elements. The most effective flashing is made up of two elements, the flashing and the counter- flashing.
The base flashing is an L shaped piece of metal extending up the chimney side and under the roofing shingles. The counter flashing, which overlaps the base flashing, is imbedded and sealed in the chimney's masonry joints. This two element flashing allows both the roof and the chimney to expand or contract at their own rates without breaking the waterproof seal in either area.

Waterproof Your Chimney
Most masonry materials are porous and will absorb large amounts of water. Common brick is like a sponge, absorbing water and wicking moisture to the chimney interior. Defective mortar joints or the use of improper mortar or brick can greatly increase the tendency to absorb and convey water to the interior of the masonry chimney structure.
Several products have been developed specifically for use as waterproofing agents on masonry chimneys. These formulas are vapor permeable which means that they allow the chimney to breathe out, but not in. Thus water that has penetrated the chimney, or moisture that has originated from inside, is allowed to escape, while the waterproofing agent prevents water from entering from the outside.
Paint, or any non vapor permeable water sealer, should never be used as a waterproofing agent because it will trap moisture inside the chimney, accelerating deterioration.
Water damage to masonry chimneys is usually a slow, subtle process. The problem is often not evident until it has become quite serious.
Although these water prevention measures may cost a few dollars initially, they will save you the major expense of large masonry repairs or rebuilding of the entire chimney in the not too distant future, and as such represent a wise investment in your home." (http://www.csia.org/)
